iMessage video size limit
Apple doesn't publish a limit, but in practice iMessage delivers videos up to about 100 MB between Apple devices — a couple of minutes of phone footage at full quality. The catch is the green bubble: when the recipient isn't on iMessage, the message goes out as MMS through your carrier, and MMS caps video at roughly 1 to 3.5 MB, which is why a video that sends fine to one friend gets crushed or refused for another.
iMessage video limits at a glance
| What | Limit |
|---|---|
| iMessage to iMessage (blue bubble) | ~100 MB (unofficial) |
| Fallback to MMS (green bubble) | Apple publishes no number; ~100 MB is the practical iMessage-to-iMessage ceiling. If the recipient isn't on iMessage it falls back to MMS at roughly 1–3.5 MB. |
| Video length | No time limit of its own — only the size counts. Messages does offer to send a long video at lower quality, which is its own compression, not a length cut. |
Because the limit is unofficial, the exact figure varies a little with iOS version and connection, and Messages may quietly downscale a very large video rather than refuse it. Staying under 100 MB avoids surprises; staying under 3.5 MB is what it takes when the bubble is green.
Get your video under the iMessage limit
Drop the video below. It is compressed to just under 100 MB on your own device — nothing is uploaded — at the best quality that size allows, so it sends first time and looks the way you shot it. For a green-bubble recipient, use the full compressor with a custom target of 3 MB instead.
How much video fits in 100 MB?
Plenty — 100 MB is roomy compared with email or Discord. These rows are what this compressor actually produces from a typical phone recording — full HD, 30 frames a second, with sound.
| Video length | What you get |
|---|---|
| 1 minute | Full HD at the original quality — nothing is lost |
| 5 minutes | Nearly full HD, still sharp on any screen |
| 15 minutes | Reduced size — clear on a phone, a little soft on a TV |
| 30 minutes | Small picture; watchable, blocky on a big screen |
Even an hour of footage fits in 100 MB at a small picture size, so length is rarely the problem on iMessage. Over MMS it is the whole problem: at 3.5 MB, about 30 seconds stays watchable and anything past a few minutes has to be cut, which the compressor offers to do for you when a clip is too long.
Blue bubble, green bubble
Whether a video arrives intact depends less on its size than on how it travels. Between Apple devices signed into iMessage, it goes over the internet with the ~100 MB ceiling. To an Android phone, or to an iPhone with iMessage off, Messages falls back to MMS through your mobile carrier — and carriers cap MMS at 1 to 3.5 MB, so the video is either shrunk to a blur or fails to send. Since iOS 18, iPhones can also use RCS with Android phones where the carrier supports it, which lifts the ceiling to around 100 MB again, but not every carrier does.
For a green-bubble recipient the reliable route is a link — AirDrop for someone nearby, or a shared iCloud, Google Drive or Dropbox link — or a video small enough to survive MMS. Everything on this page runs locally in your browser: your video never leaves your device, and there is no account or watermark.
